Hebrews 7:1-10

Hebrews 7 opens with the author finally prepared to explain the significance of the Melchizedekian priesthood. But who is Melchizedek? Why does he matter? Today, we will look at the person and significance of Melchizedek. While most of the session discussions have centered on a text and personal reflection, today’s discussion will be more historical and educational. Because the author of Hebrews will emphasize the Melchizedekian priesthood going forward, we want to understand what that is before we continue our study of the text.

  1. Read Genesis 14. After each paragraph, stop, summarize, and briefly discuss. If you need help, refer to the summary notes in the Guided Study.
  2. Who is Melchizedek? Where does he come from, what does he do, and what is unique about him?
  3. To whom or to what does Melchizedek attribute Abram’s victory in Genesis 14:19–20? What is significant about that? What do you learn about Melchizedek’s view of God from reading Genesis 14:19–20?
  4. Read Hebrews 7:1–10. What new details or insights does the author of Hebrews provide about Melchizedek that you have not seen or noticed before?
  5. As the book of Hebrews continues, the author will help us see not only who Melchizedek was but also why he matters when we consider who Christ is. In closing, pray with one another. Like Melchizedek prayed blessings over Abram, pray blessings over one another.

OVerview

Ross Lester looks at Hebrews 7:1-10 to show that, in Jesus, we have a priest who is a king and a king who is a priest, we have righteousness and peace, we have eternal representation and security, and we have every blessing we could ever need.
