Habakkuk 1:1

  1. Read Habakkuk 1:1. God calls Habakkuk to be a prophet, to speak what he sees and hears from God. In that sense, Habakkuk is set apart as a steward. What does it mean to be a steward? How might that relate to understanding an “oracle” as a burden?
  2. To be a watchman is to be aware of your immediate surroundings even as you look beyond them. You scan the horizon for signs of danger and signs of hope. Why are both essential to being a faithful watchman? What could you miss if you focus on one or the other?
  3. God appoints prophets as watchmen and women of Israel. How are the prophets evidence of God’s faithfulness to His people, even when they are unfaithful to Him?
  4. Read Hebrews 10:19–25. As followers of Jesus, how are we to be watchmen and women for one another today? What habits and disciplines help you be watchful and hopeful? What needs to change in your life to be a better watchman (or woman)? How can this community support you and join you in that?
