1. Read Philippians 2:1–2. What do you think Paul means in Philippians 2:2? Describe what it looks like to be of the “same mind,” have the “same love,” and be “in full accord.” How can personal preferences or disagreements hinder the unity
Paul describes here? How have you seen that play out before—in others and in yourself?
2. How well does Philippians 2:2 describe your own posture toward and participation in your church? Explain.
3. Read Philippians 2:3–4. Which people in your life make it the most difficult for you to put Philippians 2:3–4 into practice? Why do you think that is? What could it look like for you to lay down selfish ambition for the sake of unity in God’s church?
4. Humility is the hallmark of true unity, and true unity is the unmistakable fruit of the Holy Spirit’s work and presence in a church. One of the things that keeps a church from ever reaching its full potential of functioning as a single, beautiful body is the ever present peril of pride. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Where is pride present in your own life? If left unrepented, how could your pride eventually weaken the unity of your church? Be honest, then go to God in prayer, confessing how you have been prideful.
5. Read Philippians 2:5–11. Talk about everything you see in this passage that speaks to Jesus’ display of humility.
6. Notice the contrast between Philippians 2:8 and 2:9. Jesus willingly obeyed, even to the point of death and public shame. Yet God exalted Him. This is the mindset Paul calls us to adopt. What would it look like for you to embrace that mindset in everyday life—relationships, work, ministry, conflict, etc.? What is one situation you are facing right now where adopting this mindset would significantly transform the way you think, feel, and respond to the situation?
Tyler David explores how following Jesus leads to radical humility and sacrifice within us, enabling us to reflect the mind and life of Christ.
