1 Kings 12-14 | 2 Chronicles 10-12

  1. Read From Solomon to Rehoboam and An Overview of Rehoboam. To begin with, what stands out to you about King Rehoboam?
  2. Read 2 Chronicles 10:1-11. Compare and contrast the advice both groups of counselors gave to Rehoboam.
  3. Who are the people you let speak into your life whenever hardship or perplexing situations arise? Give some examples, and describe the relationships and the counsel these people typically provide for you.
  4. Describe a time when you exercised poor leadership for the sake of self-interest, caring more about yourselt than the people you were leading. If that is too uncomfortable, or you can't think of anything, describe a time when you witnessed someone doing that—but without naming names.
  5. Read 1 Kings 14:21-24. What do you think verse 14:22 means, that the people provoked God's jealousy? What reason would God have to be jealous? What things do you think provoke God's jealousy today?
  6. 2 Chronicles 12:12 states that God's wrath turned from Rehoboam when the king humbled himselt. What is humility and why do you think God cares so much about it?
  7. The story of Rehoboam reminds us that until we're secure in God, we will demand to be served, cling to control, and exploit what we're meant to protect instead of laying ourselves down like our King Jesus. While our culture prizes the confident, the accomplished, and the influential, Jesus calls us to follow in His footsteps, along the narrow path of self-denial (Matthew 16:24). Spend some time confessing to one another where you have been prideful, arrogant, or foolish. Be honest with yourself and with one another. Then spend some time praying with and for one another.
