Read Hebrews 9:15–23. The author compares the new covenant to a last will and testament. What does the eternal inheritance we received from the death of Christ provide for us?
Sometimes we are tempted to think that we can, somehow, atone for our sin—often because we have too high a view of ourselves or too low a view of God’s holiness. We may try to do good things, promise we’ll never do it again, or make excuses for our sin. In what specific ways are you tempted to try to atone for your own sin?
Read Exodus 24:3–8 and Hebrews 9:24–28. According to Hebrews 9:24–28, what was hidden in the old covenant that is now revealed in Jesus? In other words, how did the old system prefigure (foreshadow) what Christ has done?
Notice the second sentence in verse 9:26. If Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for sin, what additional payment is left to pay in order to atone for our sin?
What do you usually do when you feel guilty about your sin? Where do you need to trust in the finished work of Jesus today? In what sin, situations, or circumstances do you need to be reminded that Jesus is currently in the presence of God on your behalf?
