Read Hebrews 13:7–8 and make a few initial observations about this passage.
The quality of a church leader ought to be judged not by how charismatic they are as a leader, teacher, or communicator, but by how faithfully they proclaim and imitate Christ, and how well they persevere in the faith themselves. What do you think the second sentence of Hebrews 13:7 means? What would it look like for you to obey this instruction?
At first glance, Hebrews 13:8 can almost appear as if it comes out of nowhere. But look again. What do you think is the connection between 13:7 and 13:8?
Think back across the whole span of your Christian walk. Who have been some of the leaders who have uniquely shaped your faith and life by teaching and modeling for you the Word of God? Honor them now by reflecting on their unique role in your life. What did they teach you? How did you flourish under their leadership?
Read Hebrews 13:9. What are some of the “diverse and strange teachings” you have observed that people in the Church today are particularly prone to be led away by?
Read Hebrews 13:17–19. In your church context, what do you think it looks like to put Hebrews 13:17 into practice? How does that make you feel and how well would you say you do with that?
The elders of your church will have to give an account to God one day about how well they did in leading you. Spend a few minutes praying for your pastors and leaders individually by name. They desperately need your prayers.
