2 Kings 22–23 | 2 Chronicles 34–35

  1. What is one passage or teaching from the Bible that has consistently challenged the way you are choosing to live your life? Explain.
  2. Read An Overview of Josiah. Briefly, what stands out to you about the life and reign of King Josiah?
  3. Read 2 Chronicles 34:18-21. Josiah had been doing many good and righteous things. But when he heard God's Word read, he looked into the mirror of God's Law and saw how deeply broken he and the people truly were. What are some passages or teachings in the Bible that you see some Christians tempted to ignore? What is the danger in overlooking these parts of God's Word?
  4. Read 2 Chronicles 34:29-33. When Josiah heard the words of the Law, he did not keep them to himself. He summoned all Judah and Jerusalem to come and hear, understand, and commit to God and His Word. The king acted with urgency and courage, exhorting the people to submit their lives to the Word of God. What does it look like in your life to help others understand God and joyfully follow Him through His Word? Who might you invite to study Scripture with you—maybe even someone who has never heard or studied it before?
  5. Read 2 Kings 23:25-27. It's one thing to follow God faithfully when those around you are doing the same. It's another thing entirely to do it when you stand alone, or when the currents of history seem to flow toward ever-deepening darkness. Josiah gives us a picture not only of a wise king but also of one who "turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and all his might" (2 Kings 23:25). Where is your life at odds with God's Word? In what ways are you holding back from giving God the full devotion of your heart, soul, and strength? Spend a few moments in honest reflection with one another. Then go to God in prayer, asking Him to make you all more like Josiah—a leader whose life ultimately points forward to the faithfulness of King Jesus.
