Hebrews 2:17-18

  1. Read Hebrews 2:17–18. Verse 17 marks the first mention of Jesus’ priesthood and its superiority. This idea will develop into a major theme. Look again at the phrase “a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God.” What do you think it means for Jesus to be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God?
  2. In your own words, what is temptation? Hebrews 2:18 says Jesus “suffered when tempted.” What does it look like to suffer when tempted?
  3. Read Luke 4:1–13. In what three ways was Jesus tempted, and how did He successfully resist each temptation?
  4. If you are comfortable sharing, what are some specific ways you are regularly tempted to sin?
  5. Standing at the precipice of a temptation, we have a decision to make. What does it look like to continuously experience in Jesus a superior satisfaction for every need and desire? What might it look like for you to find specific help in Jesus for resisting what regularly tempts you?
  6. Read Matthew 6:7–15. Use the Lord’s Prayer to guide your prayer time together.
