Hebrews 2:11-16

  1. Read Hebrews 2:10–13. What do you think verse 2:10 means? Why is it “fitting” that Jesus had to suffer? Do you think God could have accomplished salvation in another way that did not include Jesus’ suffering?
  2. Hebrews 2:10 states that Jesus was made perfect through suffering. What do you think that means? How could Jesus be made perfect when He was fully God? Did Jesus ever sin?
  3. No one prays for suffering. Why? Suffering is a painful and unwelcome experience—who wants to suffer? It can be easy to view suffering as something to escape or avoid at all costs. What is one way you are experiencing suffering today? Do you believe God has a purpose for you in this suffering, or do you believe it is happening against God’s will?
  4. Why do you think Jesus had to live as a human to become the perfect sacrifice for our sins? For help, see Galatians 3:10–14 and 2 Corinthians 5:21.
  5. Read Hebrews 2:14–16. Satan shows up in this passage. But the emphasis is not on the devil’s power—it rests on Christ’s triumph over Satan and over death. As those who have been united to Christ, how is it that we are no longer slaves to the fear of death? What does it look like to be a lifelong slave to the fear of death?
  6. Spend some time meditating on the cross of Jesus. Why was He a fitting sacrifice for sin? Why was He willing to suffer and die? What did He accomplish on the cross for you? What is He currently doing in you? Meditate on these things and share them in prayer with one another.
