Habakkuk 1:2-4

  1. Read Habakkuk 1:2–4. What do you think about Habakkuk and his ability to complain to God? What might he know about God that allows him to speak the way he does?
  2. Consider what you know about the Israelites’ complaints in the wilderness versus Habakkuk’s. What is different about (a) the nature of their complaints, (b) who they address with their complaints, and (c) the motives and desires behind their complaints? (For reference, read one or more of the following passages: Exodus 15:22–25; Exodus 16:1–4; Exodus 17:1–7; Numbers 14:1–4.)
  3. If God’s prophets lament and Jesus laments, what does that mean for you? (For examples, read John 11:1–44 or Mark 15:33–39.)
  4. When have you felt like God wasn’t paying attention to you or what was going on in the world? What helped you navigate that experience?
  5. What do you need to persist in prayer about? How can this community support you and join you in that prayer?
