2 Kings 18–20 | 2 Chronicles 29–31

  1. When you think of the word "revival" what comes to mind? What is revival?
  2. Read An Overview of Hezekiah's Early Reign. Briefly, what stands out to you about the life and reign of King Hezekiah?
  3. Read 2 Chronicles 29:3-11. The first thing Hezekiah did as king was to reopen the temple. Why is that such a significant first act? Also, why do you think he focused so much on the "purity" and "consecration" of the temple and temple leaders—what does that say about his understanding of true worship?
  4. In 2 Chronicles 30, Hezekiah wrote letters to the rest of Judah and all who remained in the northern territory of Israel after the Assyrian siege. He invited all to come and celebrate Passover in Jerusalem. Read what the king's letter to Israel said in 2 Chronicles 30:6-9. What true things about God is Hezekiah trying to compel the readers of his letter to see?
  5. When you think about your own life, what led you to turn to God in faith and repentance? What was going on in your heart, mind, and life in the days leading up to you finally putting your trust in God?
  6. 2 Chronicles 31 continues with how Hezekiah's reforms prompted a widespread response across the land. People joyfully brought tithes and offerings, the priests and Levites were faithfully restored to their duties, and the nation demonstrated genuine devotion and renewed faithfulness to God. God's people didn't give out of pressure, but delight. Revival leads to joyful generosity because the nature of grace is that it is always overflowing. For us today, the gospel we have received in and through Christ is not only pardon for our sins but also power for our lives—a power that softens selfish hearts, reshapes our desires, and reorients our affections toward the glory of God and the good of others. True revival leaves no part of life untouched, for it demands not just obedience, but a heart that cannot help but overflow in worship, generosity, and love. In closing, spend some time in discussion: What have you received in Christ? Where are you withholding joy, time, or money from God's purposes? Then go to God in prayer for one another.
