Hebrews 11:5-6 & Genesis 5

  1. Read Genesis 5:1–31. Unlike other figures in the Hebrews 11 Hall of Faith, we only know a few details about Enoch from the original story. But the author of Hebrews helps interpret the story for us. Read Hebrews 11:5–6. Hebrews 11:5 tells us that Enoch “was commended as having pleased God.” What do you think it looks like to “please the Lord”?
  2. The phrase “Enoch walked with God” is stated twice in three verses (Genesis 5:22–24). What do you think walking with God might have looked like for Enoch? What are some specific ways you can walk with God today?
  3. Notice the phrase “he rewards” in Hebrews 11:6. What do you think that means? If God gives out different rewards, does that mean some Christians will be happier in heaven than others?
  4. Enoch is featured in Hebrews 11 as a forebearer in the faith worthy of our imitation today. What specific opportunities do you have to demonstrate faith like Enoch and live in a way that is “pleasing to the Lord”?
  5. Spend some time drawing near to God and seeking after Him. Read and meditate on 2 Corinthians 4:16–18. Pray together and encourage and challenge each other about the things you identified in the previous question.
