Together read Genesis 25:29–34 and read or summarize Genesis 27. Almost every character in the Bible (except One) is deeply flawed. Why do you think God chose to use so many morally corrupt people in His plan for redemption? What does this tell us about who God is?
When Jacob leaves Canaan for Haran, he encounters God through an extraordinary dream (Genesis 28:10–22). He sees a bridge between heaven and earth with angels descending upon it, showing that God is still committed to making the earth His dwelling place. What does it say about God that He needs nothing from us, yet He still wants to dwell with us?
Then, when Jacob begins his return journey to Canaan years later (Genesis 32), he wrestles with God, who dislocates Jacob’s hip, permanently weakening him. All Jacob’s future steps will remind him of his dependence upon divine grace. What is an event in your life that caused you to walk with a limp (symbolically speaking) and depend more on God? Explain.
Read Hebrews 11:21 and Genesis 47:29–48:22. Jacob was confident that God would fulfill His promise even when it became apparent that it would not happen in his own life. And so, Jacob blesses his offspring and entrusts his life to the Sovereign God. Is there anything that you desire to have or experience but are unsure whether it will ever happen for you in this life? What is it? Be honest.
In light of what you just shared, what would it look like to entrust your life to God, no matter what the outcome? Spend some time discussing and then bring it to God in prayer together. Pray for faith like Jacob that looks to the future and trusts that God will fulfill all of His promises, and that He can be trusted no matter what course our life takes.
