1 Kings 15:8-24 | 2 Chronicles 14-16

  1. Read From Abijam to Asa and An Overview of Asa. Briefly, what stands out to you about King Asa?
  2. Read 2 Chronicles 14:1-12. Describe Asa's approach to leadership. What did he do that set him apart from previous kings? From this passage, what can you infer about Asa's view of God?
  3. Read 2 Chronicles 15:1-7. Make some observations about Azariah's message to Asa. Look at 2 Chronicles 15:2 again. When in your life have you felt most aware of God's nearness? What was true of your heart and habits in those times?
  4. Read 2 Chronicles 16:7-10. For all the good he did early in his reign, Asa failed to finish well. What foolish compromises did he make and why do you think that mattered to God? Why is it important to remember we have a God who sees and knows all? How does it change the way you live your day-to-day life, knowing God watches over every aspect of it, including your heart?
  5. Read Seek the Lord This Day. What practices are you cultivating now that will help you finish your race well? Are you becoming more humble and tender to God's correction or more defensive and resistant? Where are you currently tempted to shift from dependence on God to self-reliance? Spend some time in honest reflection with one another, then go to God in prayer, laying down each of these things at His throne and asking for His grace to persevere until the end.

OVerview

The race only matters if you finish it. Matt Blackwell explores King Asa’s reign—one that started in faith and dependence, only to end in self-reliance and a dulled heart toward God.
