Hebrews 13:20-25

  1. Read Hebrews 13:20–21. It is common for epistles in the New Testament to close with a benediction (a prayer of blessing), and this is one of the most beautiful and theologically rich prayers in Scripture. What are some of the specific aspects of this prayer that connect with other themes developed throughout Hebrews? Try to identify as many connections as you can.
  2. One of the major themes in Hebrews has been perseverance in the faith. What do you think is the relationship between faith and prayer? How is prayer a demonstration of faith?
  3. The author of Hebrews prays the prayer in Hebrews 13:20–21 for his readers, which means that this prayer was prayed for you! Read through each line of the prayer again. How do you specifically desire to see this prayer answered in your own life?
  4. Read Hebrews 13:22–25. What do you think the author is trying to communicate in Hebrews 13:22?
  5. What do you think it means for the author to end Hebrews with “Grace be with you all”? Why is that a fitting end in light of everything the author of Hebrews has been trying to communicate in this letter?
  6. In closing, use the prayer in Hebrews 13:20–21 to guide you through an extended time of prayer for yourself and those in your Christian community. Pray for things like peace with God, new spiritual life, spiritual direction, equipping, provision, obedience to His will, greater holiness, effective gospel ministry, and greater glory for Jesus.
“Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Hebrews 13:20–21)
