Only Jesus - Theology Of The Song - Austin Stone Worship: Kids

The core truths of the gospel are told in the songs of this album.  It was written based on six basic truths that we use in our children’s ministry:

  1. God created everything, including me (“You Made Everything”).
  2. God is King of everything, including me (“King of Everything”).
  3. God is good and is the greatest treasure in the world (“I Found a Treasure”).
  4. I am born a sinner and I need a rescuer (“Rescue For My Soul”).
  5. Jesus is the Rescuer who can bring me to the greatest treasure in the world (“Only Jesus”).
  6. Tell the world that Jesus is the Rescuer (“Tell The World”).

Only Jesus” is based on the truth number five, Jesus is the rescuer who can bring me to the greatest treasure in the world. Only Jesus. We repeat this phrase over and over again in this song, because we believe that Jesus is the only one who can save us from the penalty of sin and restore our relationship with God. No amount of good works or religion can take away the punishment we deserve. There is nothing we can do. But God intervened and sent Jesus (Ephesians 2:1-9). Jesus took our punishment on the cross. Salvation can be found in Him alone. Jesus is the only one that comes after us in all of our sin and filth. And He is the only one who, when He comes after us, can actually do anything to help us.

No amount of good works or religion can take away the punishment we deserve. Jesus is the only one who can save us from the penalty of sin and restore our relationship with God.

He is not only our Rescuer, but He leads us to the greatest treasure in the world. The greatest treasure in the world is to be in relationship with God our Father.  The greatest treasure is not about riches and fame, but about being fully loved by God and being changed to be more like God.

The world tells us and our kids that happiness, fulfillment, and love are found apart from Jesus. Rather than seeing all that we have in Jesus, we are prone to believe that God is holding out on us and so we look elsewhere to find our fulfillment and help. There is no greater love, there is no greater treasure, and there is no greater power apart from Jesus. He is the Rescuer we need. He not only rescues us but then He blesses us with abundant life (John 10:10). We intentionally repeat the phrase, “Only Jesus,” to drive this point home. We need to remind ourselves and our kids that all that we need is found in Jesus. When singing this song, we are declaring that Jesus is the only one that can love and save us like our heart was made to be loved.

In the chorus, we sing that Jesus is not like anyone else. Why can’t anyone else be our rescuer? Why only Jesus? Because He laid down His life for us. He gave up heaven and perfect relationship with God the Father to come and be rejected by us, the very ones He was dying for (Philippians 2:1-8). No one has ever shown such a great love. And no one else’s love is able to change us and shape us like His. His love is the only love that will rescue us from sin and death and all the things we fear and hate. His love is the only love that does not change. He is a place of safety and security.

The bridge then shows our response to Jesus’s love for us. Because Jesus is the only answer and because He is like no one else, He is worthy of our worship (Philippians 2:9-11). He is holy, unmarred by sin, perfect, and without flaw. He is worthy of our worship because there is no fault in Him. He is worthy of our worship because of His death and resurrection. He is worthy of our worship because no one can love us like He can. He died for us and led us to the greatest treasure. Now, we go and tell the world!
