During First Tuesday Prayer each month we have a program called Kids' Perspectives. In case you did not know, this class is taught by a woman named Sharon Hampton. Sharon has had many years of experience teaching kids about missions. She has a passion for the nations and for kids. She has an incredible gift of teaching the kids and captivates their attention. If you ever want to come sit in and observe, you are always welcome.
Last Tuesday, your child learned about the worldview of tribal groups around the world. Although tribal practices may differ from culture to culture, they are based on animism, a belief in powerful spirits that live in natural objects like rocks, trees, mountains, water and animals. Believing that these spirits have control over nature and influence human life, tribal peoples live in fear of evil spirits. They try to influence the actions of the spirits by offering gifts, performing rituals, and visiting mediators such as witchdoctors, medicine men, and shamans. They may even pray to their ancestors, seeking help from their spirits.
The kids watched a DVD about the Bhil (beel), a tribal group in North India. They also participated in cultural activities, ate some food that the Bhil eat, and prayed for the tribal people. We challenged the kids to pray at home for some of the tribal children they learned about tonight in their lesson.
Here are some activities you guys can do with the kids to follow up on what they learned:
- Have your child tell you what THUMB stands for. (Tribals, Hindus, Unreligious, Muslims, Buddhists)
- Have your child share something they learned about tribal forms of worship.
- Read Romans 8:15. Discuss how belief in God could change the life of the tribal peoples.
- Pray for the tribal children, that they will come to know Jesus as Savior.
- Go over the activity sheets in the packet we sent home with your child to help them learn more about the Bhil. (if you would like this packet, email Becca Harris)
Thank you for partnering with us! How awesome to hear these kids pray for other people groups! How powerful their prayers! It is exciting to think about the great things the Lord is stirring in their hearts!!
Even though we have prayer every week this month, we won't be doing an intensive people group study again until the First Tuesday of October, but Sharon will be doing some teaching and storytelling about a Muslim boy that your child will not want to miss. We hope that you will join us each Tuesday during the prayer for the city.
