Makarios

The Austin Stone partners with Makarios – a faith-based nonprofit organization focused on educational and economic development in Hispañola (the island comprising Dominican Republic and Haiti).

In the summer of 2005, our first group traveled to the Dominican Republic to practically help the poor traveling from village to village and in discipling Dominican believers.

Since that initial trip, we've continued to send short-term teams. Of late, these teams have helped Makarios open a new education center in the town of Tamarindo. In the past year, we have also sent several long-term missionaries to work with Makarios.

Summer 2008 Trip Dates:
  • June 6-14 (church-wide, 17 & older)
  • July 25-August 2 (church-wide, 17 & older)

Back at home, small groups and individuals at The Austin Stone support Makarios by sponsoring the education costs of individual children.

Dominican Joe

Dominican Joe, a coffee shop in central Austin (and another way to say "coffee from the Dominican Republic") supports the work of Makarios by purchasing their coffee. Makarios' works directly with farmers in the Dominican Republic, paying higher wages and supporting their communities in an effort to develop self-sustaining skills for the future.

The Austin Stone serves Dominican Joe coffee at it's Sunday morning worship services.
