Mission often begins with the simple desire to serve God’s purposes.
Recent college graduate Robert Brown will enter the University of Texas School of Law this August. “I really wanted to put myself in an environment of complete humility and service and to glorify God by loving others during the time lapse between my undergraduate education and law school.
“1 John says that ‘if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.’ I can’t think of a better way to live that out than to show compassion as exemplified in the parable of the Good Samaritan.”
For six weeks this summer, Robert will serve a refugee community in North Africa through mercy ministry and relational evangelism.
When asked about how God led him to spend his summer this way, Robert says: “I believe there is power in removing oneself from the security, comfort, and practicality of our American lifestyle and being left with nothing to rely on but the truth of the cross. Where in the Bible does the urgency of the gospel take a back seat to personal security and comfort?
“I believe the Lord began working this call in my heart last fall. I had become passionately interested in an organization called the International Justice Mission, and as I began to see how God might use my future law degree to serve His kingdom through this organization, I started feeling the call to spend several missional weeks abroad this summer.
“Ending up in North Africa was completely the work of God – I asked Joey Shaw if he could help me find a trip of at least six weeks. The day before Joey called me back, my roommate had been joking about the fact that I tend to leave the country often for very random places. Someone asked what I was doing this summer, and my roommate sarcastically replied, ‘Oh, ya know, going to [a major city in North Africa] or something like that.’ It seemed like a pretty clear sign when Joey called me the next day and asked, “How would you feel about going to [a major city in North Africa]?”
Join Robert on mission this summer by praying for him. Pray along with us:
- That Robert would boldly proclaim the gospel
- That he would continually serve the refugee community and other workers with selflessness and sacrifice
